As the year comes to a close, Swiggy Instamart has released its year-end report, providing intriguing insights into how shopping habits have evolved in India throughout 2024. Covering data from January 1 to December 1, the report highlights some remarkable trends and unique spending patterns across the country. One of the standout moments in 2024’s shopping season occurred on Dhanteras, when a man from Ahmedabad made headlines by spending an astounding Rs 8,32,032 on gold coins. This purchase not only set a personal record but also mirrored the festive shopping mood across India. Diwali shopping saw an interesting trend, with over Rs 45 lakh collectively spent on brooms in a single day, highlighting the importance of traditional Diwali cleaning rituals. Meanwhile, Delhi spent a whopping ₹4.60 lakh on poker chips on Diwali. Bengaluru leads in condom spending Swiggy Instamart’s data also revealed some unexpected shopping habits. Notably, one in every 140 orders included a sexual wellness product, with Bengaluru emerging the “top spender on condoms for the year." Late-night snacking Late-night cravings were another huge trend. Swiggy Instamart recorded a surge in orders with the peak time for stealthy orders being between 10 pm and 11 pm, a period often associated with shopping for snacks and comfort foods. Popular choices during these hours included masala-flavoured chips, Kurkure, and , even flavoured condoms. Cities like Delhi, Hyderabad and Bengaluru were at the forefront of these late-night shopping habits. Other highlights · Shoppers in Delhi and Dehradun emerged as the biggest spenders, collectively spending over Rs 20 lakh on essential kitchen staples such as atta, milk, and oil. · Items such as milk, curd, dosa batter, chips and soft drinks dominated the charts nationwide, reflecting the typical Indian household’s consumption preferences. · A pet lover in Mumbai made an extraordinary purchase, spending Rs 15 lakh on pet supplies, with a particular focus on items for dogs and cats. · In an unexpected turn, Mumbai set a record by spending ₹8,20,360 on tonic water in a single day, suggesting a growing trend for this beverage. · Goa made a splash with a single user spending nearly ₹35,000 on tonic water. · Delhi elevated its passion for instant noodles, with residents splurging around Rs 60 crore on the popular snack. · In Vizag, playtime became a serious affair, with one user spending ₹27,742 on toys. · On December 1, 4,500 kgs of onions were ordered in just one hour across the country, from 7 pm to 8 pm, highlighting the continuing demand for this essential kitchen item. · The fastest delivery of the year took place in Kochi, where a basket containing bananas and red amaranthus was delivered in just 89 seconds, covering a distance of 180 metres. top videos View all Swipe Left For Next Video View all · On the other hand, the “cheapest order of the year" came from Hyderabad, where a pencil sharpener priced at Rs 3 was purchased on the platform. · Hyderabad and Bengaluru adopted the ‘deliver without bag’ option, showing that convenience and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand.
