The Delhi Police Economic Offences Wing (EOW) arrested Deepak Gupta, the brother-in-law of BharatPe co-founder Ashneer Grover, on Friday in connection with alleged fund misappropriation at the fintech company. This is the second arrest in the case, according to a police officer who spoke to PTI.
Gupta was named in an FIR filed in May 2023 against Grover, his wife Madhuri Jain, and other family members over an alleged Rs 81-crore fraud. Grover has denied the accusations, claiming he is "in the right."
Earlier, in August, the EOW arrested Amit Kumar Bansal, who was allegedly linked to non-existent firms that received Rs 72 crore in payments from BharatPe's directors between 2019 and 2021. The investigation uncovered 33 such fake vendors connected to Bansal and his brother.
BharatPe has accused Grover and his family of causing losses totaling Rs 81.3 crore. These losses reportedly resulted from fraudulent payments to fake HR consultants, inflated payments through vendors tied to the accused, fraudulent input-tax credit claims, GST penalties, unauthorized payments to travel agencies, falsified invoices, and destruction of evidence.
