Zomato has unveiled its much anticipated year-end report for 2024, offering a glimpse into the evolving food habits of Indians. While biryani remains the top dish for the eighth consecutive year, pizza, which has traditionally held a strong position, saw a noticeable decline in orders. Here’s a look at some of the standout insights from this year’s findings. Biryani dominates, but sales drop Biryani continued its reign as the undisputed favourite with over nine crore orders in 2024 on Zomato. However, despite the massive volume, there was a dip in sales compared to the previous year. In 2023, Zomato recorded a staggering 10,09,80,615 biryani orders, but this number dropped to 9,13,99,110 in 2024—a decrease of almost 95 lakh orders. Pizza’s decline Advertisement While pizza has long been a staple of Indian food culture, it didn’t fare as well this year. The number of pizza orders on Zomato fell from 7,45,30,036 in 2023 to 5,84,46,908 in 2024, a significant drop of over 20 per cent. Swiggy’s findings: Dosa takes over Zomato isn’t the only platform keeping track of food trends. Swiggy’s data revealed that dosa took the second spot as the most-ordered dish in 2024, with a whopping 2.3 crore orders. This suggests a growing appetite for traditional, comfort foods alongside the usual fast-food favourites like pizza. One customer, for example, ordered 120 manchurian combos to feed an entire train bogey! Another jaw-dropping statistic came from Bengaluru, where a foodie spent over Rs 5 lakh on a single dining experience. It’s clear that some customers are willing to splurge for food.
