The Porbandar Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has directed Reliance General Insurance to pay Rs 50 lakh to Lakha Karavadra for his truck that was destroyed in a fire. The insurer had repudiated the claim, saying additional LED lights installed by the truck owner had caused the fire.
Karavadra contested this rejection at the commission.
On Nov 5, the commission issued its ruling, instructing the insurer to pay Rs 50 lakh along with 9% interest and Rs 5,000 towards legal costs. The applicant, who runs a transport business, bought the truck through financing and paid
instalments regularly.
The truck caught fire near Dhule in Maharashtra while going from Wankaner to Hyderabad. The local municipality deployed firefighters and the incident was reported at Dhule taluka police station and a panchnama was drawn up.
After notifying the insurance company, the applicant submitted a claim. The surveyor assessed the situation, confirming the claim's legitimacy
