PhonePe, a major digital payments company, is considering expanding its retail payment operations to new regions like Southeast Asia and the Gulf. The company plans to obtain a payment license in these regions and set up retail payment operations there. The company's expertise in scaling up business in India is expected to be valuable in these new markets as digital payments gain traction.
Additionally, the National Payments Corporation of India is promoting the adoption of the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) in countries like Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Nepal, Singapore, and France. PhonePe currently provides UPI payments to Indian travelers visiting these locations and aims to set up payment systems for residents in those areas as well.
While several Indian payment companies have operations outside India, PhonePe aims to stand out by focusing on consumer-facing payments, both offline and online.
