A Zepto warehouse located in Dharavi has had its operating license suspended by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) following a recent inspection that uncovered multiple serious food safety violations.
According to FDA officials, the warehouse was found to be operating in highly unhygienic conditions. Inspectors reported discovering fungal growth on food items, expired products still in storage, and improper handling of consumables. Alarmingly, food items were stored near stagnant water, and the facility failed to maintain required temperature controls—violations that pose significant health risks to consumers.
The FDA has suspended the warehouse’s food safety license until the company can demonstrate full compliance with regulatory standards. “Till the contraventions are cleared, the facility will remain shut,” said Joint Commissioner (Food) Mangesh Mane. He added that further inspections will be conducted at other Zepto warehouses, as well as at facilities operated by similar quick-commerce companies.
The suspension raises broader concerns about food safety practices in the rapidly expanding quick-delivery sector. Zepto, which has built its brand on ultra-fast grocery and essentials delivery, now faces increased regulatory scrutiny over its backend operations.
As of now, Zepto has not issued an official public statement on the incident. The FDA has made it clear that the license will only be reinstated once the company takes corrective action and passes a follow-up inspection.
