Mangaluru, Jul 23: New Delhi-based Gold Plus Glass Industry Co Ltd has shown interest in investing Rs 2,527 crore in the city for setting up a glass manufacturing unit here. If the discussions fructify and the industry becomes a reality, about 500 people are expected to get employment. The high level committee chaired by chief minister B S Yediyurappa, recently cleared ten new projects with an investment of Rs 13,487 crore. The glass manufacturing unit in the city is one among them Gold Plus Glass Industry Ltd that has been functioning for the last 34 years, has a capacity of producing 1,250 metric tonnes of glass every day. It manufactures float glass, architectural glass, automotive glass, industrial glass, music glass, acoustic glass etc. The company has preferred the city for its operations as silica ore that is needed for glass manufacture is available in the coastal belt and some other parts of the city and Kerala. It needs 200 acres of land for its facility and the company has requested the government to allot land near NMPT as it would be easier for dispatching glass to the country and abroad. But it is difficult to get that much land in the city. Therefore, the chances of providing land in other parts of the district are under consideration.
