KALYANI: Authorities of an iron wire factory in Kalyani Industrial Belt today announced suspension of work, rendering about 650 workers jobless. Management of the UIC Udyog Ltd pasted the suspension of work notice at the factory gate in the morning. INTTUC leader Surat Ali Biswas said the agreement for contract workers wa over in December 2012 and the management had assured them to prepare a new agreement by March this year but did not do it. Rather, they recently stopped 350 contract labourers from working, he alleged. CITU leader Sujit Das said, "Both the CITU and INTTUC unions will be meeting soon to plan a joint agitation against the suspension of work notice." On behalf of the authorities, Ram Chandra Bajaj said the factory was runnin in loss and workers were not cooperating with the management to run the factory smoothly. "We had proposed the workers for alternative jobs as the number of workers are more than we require. But they refused. Not only that, they obstructed in loading scraps. These led the authorities to serve the notice."
