    Sterlite Power SWOT Analysis

    24 February 2022

Sterlite Power & Transmission Ltd. continues to be one of the key players in the Indian power transmission space with its business model covering both domestic and international markets. A detailed look at the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of the company give a good sense of where the company stands today.

    • On the plus side, Sterlite Power has a portfolio of 27 projects in different stages of development across India and Brazil, with 13,700 circuit kilometers of transmission lines. On this scale, the company is ranked among the top three power transmission players in the country with a domestic market share of around 33%.
    • Sterlite Power, in terms of market cap, is Rs. 6,600 crore, smaller than its peers like Adani Transmission (Rs. 2.27 lakh crore) and Power Grid (Rs. 1.38 lakh crore), but its global exposure and execution track record make it stand out.
    • The company recently secured a new project in South Africa through its Brazil-based subsidiary, expected to generate revenue of USD 3.8 million, and has also partnered with Octopus Energy to expand into new plants for power generation and storage.

On the weakness front, the company carries a sizeable debt load, with working capital and term loan facilities adding up to Rs. 7,323.99 crore, a number worth tracking closely.

The prospects ahead are looking good. The renewable energy segment, in particular, is expected to get a push with government initiatives like Gati Shakti Yojana, which has an investment outlay of Rs 100 lakh crore. Sterlite Power too is planning to raise Rs. 1,250 crore through an IPO, primarily to reduce debt and fund future tenders. Also, the government will launch 44 new projects under the Green Energy Corridor with an investment of Rs. 41,369 crore, creating more bidding opportunities.

On the threats side, the competition is still fierce with Adani Transmission and Power Grid as direct competitors in the transmission segment, while Tata Power and Reliance Power compete in the power storage segment.
